Terang College’s Energy Breakthrough program has been running since 2012. It requires students to work with parents and community members to design, construct and race a vehicle that represents an ‘Energy Breakthrough’. This program is run as an extracurricular activity and sees students working together throughout the year on weekends and holidays, to prepare for their participation in the annual Energy Breakthrough event held in Maryborough in late November each year. This event requires students to complete a number of presentations about their preparations and the design and construction of their vehicle before students compete in a 24 hour endurance event. Terang College students have been recognized for their design and construction efforts by receiving awards in both 2018 and 2019. The program allows students to apply skills learnt in class along with developing new skills such as TIG welding, mould making, and the use of cutting edge materials such as carbon fibre and Kevlar. Students also develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills as they prepare for each years’ event by conducting a number of fundraising activities throughout the year.
