Starting school is an exciting, and sometimes daunting, time for children and families. At Terang College, we provide a caring and nurturing environment and program to build a strong foundation for future learning. Once children are enrolled at Terang College, they undertake a comprehensive transition to school program. This includes our Foundation teacher/s and aides, Year 6 Buddies and current Foundation students visiting the kinder on multiple occasions to form connections and become familiar faces. We have an Orientation Day and Transition Day where students have the chance to become familiar with what school is all about. We also offer additional afternoon plays in November, where students enrolled for the following year can visit, play with our current Foundation students and get used to navigating the school and basic routines; for example, lining up after lunch. We work alongside Kindergarten staff and families to ensure a smooth and supportive transition to school. Children starting school are buddied up with a Year 6 student. The Year 6 Buddies are there to help guide Foundation students and act as a support person as they begin their journey at school. Students starting school are escorted to and from bus lines and the pick-up area. Parents are invited to be active in their children’s learning journey through becoming reading helpers, Perceptual Motor Program helpers, attending school events, including our weekly Assembly and extra-curricular events, joining the Parents Association and/or becoming a School Councillor etc. We encourage families considering starting school at Terang College to attend our information sessions or to contact us for a tour.
