Year 5/6 Urban Camp

From the 16 – 18th of June, the Grade 5/6 students embarked on an exciting and educational school camp to Melbourne. Accompanied by Mrs Couch, Miss B, Mr Waltz, and Holly, students experienced three action-packed days exploring the city’s culture, history, and science.

Day 1 – All Aboard to Melbourne!

Our adventure began bright and early as students and staff caught the train from our local station to Southern Cross in Melbourne. After arriving, we caught trams to our first stop—the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

There, we toured the stadium and visited the Australian Sports Museum, where students learned about Australia’s rich sporting history and enjoyed interactive exhibits.

After our time at the MCG, we hopped on a tram and headed to Urban Camp, our accommodation for the next two nights. Once inducted, students we had dinner then participated in a Melbourne Zoo night tour. After the night tour concluded, it was back to base camp for bed.

Day 2 – Science, History and Fun

Our second day was jam-packed with discovery. We began with a visit to Scienceworks, where students engaged with hands-on exhibits and explored the wonders of science, technology, and innovation.

In the afternoon, we travelled to the Old Melbourne Gaol, where students were taken back in time to learn about the lives of past inmates and the history of law and order in Victoria. Afterwards, we visited Parliament House, where students explored one of the most important buildings in Victoria and even sat in the Legislative Assembly chamber.

To wrap up a fantastic day, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at an Italian restaurant before heading to Crown for laser tag and arcade games. The students had an absolute blast!

Day 3 – Final Adventures

On the final morning, we visited the Eureka Skydeck, where students marvelled at the panoramic views of Melbourne from 88 floors up. Our last stop was the Shrine of Remembrance, where we paid our respects and learned more about Australia’s military history.

With tired feet but happy faces, we caught the train back home, bringing with us lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for Melbourne’s rich culture and history.

This camp was an incredible opportunity for students to learn outside the classroom, gain independence, and bond with their peers. A huge thank you to Mrs Couch, Miss B, Mr Waltz, and Holly for their support and organisation in making this experience possible.
