Foundation to Year 6

Our primary program provides a strong foundation in literacy, numeracy, and wellbeing, supporting students as they develop confidence and independence.

At Terang College, our Foundation to Year 6 students are supported to grow academically, socially and emotionally in a caring and supportive environment. Through evidence-based learning we place a strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy, while also providing a wide range of learning opportunities that help students become active members of the community.

Literacy and Numeracy

Literacy and Numeracy are at the heart of our teaching and learning.
Students participate in a daily two-hour Literacy block using a Structured Literacy approach, and daily Numeracy lessons taught through Explicit Direct Instruction. This ensures students are given clear teaching, consistent routines and the support they need to succeed.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

We offer a range of programs that support students’ personal and social development, including:

  • Kitchen Garden
  • Student Representative Council
  • Purposeful Play
  • Friday Assemblies
  • Team Spirit
  • Camps
  • Sports programs
  • Strong Arts program
  • Instrumental Music Program
  • Foundation and Year 6 Buddy Program

These programs help us build a strong sense of community and belonging for all students.

Specialist and Cross-Curricular Learning

Students also participate in I.C.T, Sport, P.E, Spanish, Science, Respectful Relationships, Humanities and The Arts, with many opportunities to link learning across subjects. Technology is used across classrooms to support learning and help students connect with the world around them.

Camps, Excursions and Special Experiences

Our students take part in many exciting experiences throughout their primary years, including:

  • Foundation Play Sessions, Swimming Program, Tower Hill, Quantum, Science & Engineering Day and Books to Life
  • Year 1/2 Sleepover at the Primary Centre
  • Year 3/4 Camps to Kangaroobie or Dunkeld
  • Year 5/6 Camps to Melbourne or Sovereign Hill

These experiences support the Victorian Curriculum while also developing independence, teamwork and confidence.

Working Together

Our highly professional staff work closely with families to support every child. We also offer support programs for students who need additional help with their learning or social development. Parent helpers are always welcome and play an important role in our school community.

At Terang College, we are proud to provide a supportive, engaging and well-rounded education for all Foundation to Year 6 students.
