KEY LEARNING AREA

SA Kitchen Garden Program

The SA Kitchen Garden program provides students with practical learning experiences in growing, preparing, and sharing food. It supports healthy eating habits, teamwork, sustainability, and real-life skills in an engaging environment.

The SA Kitchen Garden Program at Terang College provides students with hands-on learning experiences that connect food, health, sustainability, and wellbeing. Through gardening and cooking, students develop practical life skills while deepening their understanding of where food comes from and how it supports healthy living.

The program is an important part of our commitment to whole-child education and real-world learning.

Learning Through Hands-On Experience

The SA Kitchen Garden Program gives students the opportunity to actively engage in growing, preparing, and sharing food. Learning takes place in both the garden and the kitchen, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge in meaningful, practical ways.

Students participate in:

  • Planting, maintaining, and harvesting seasonal produce

  • Preparing and cooking fresh, healthy meals

  • Working collaboratively in small groups

  • Developing responsibility and independence

These experiences support confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility

Through the garden, students develop an understanding of sustainability and environmental care. They learn about:

  • Seasonal growing

  • Composting and waste reduction

  • Caring for plants and natural resources

  • Respecting the environment

This helps students develop a sense of responsibility and connection to their local and global environment.

Preparing Students for Life

The skills developed through the SA Kitchen Garden Program extend well beyond the classroom. Students gain practical knowledge, confidence, and life skills that support independence and wellbeing into the future.

At Terang College, the SA Kitchen Garden Program helps students grow, learn, and thrive—both in the garden and beyond.
